KENINGAU, SABAH – A man was shot and killed by his friend in what police believe is a hunting accident in Tambunan yesterday evening.
The 20-year-old victim died at the forest scene near Kampung Sunsuron from shrapnel wounds fired from a homemade shotgun locally known as a ‘bakakuk’.
District police chief, DSP Shahrudin Mat Husain said the victim was brought to the Tambunan Hospital for an autopsy while his 25-year-old friend was arrested.
“Questioning revealed the suspect to be unemployed without any prior convictions…
“He is detained for six days for further investigation while any witnesses to the crime are urged to step forward,” he said in a statement.
Police seized the murder weapon, some ammunition shells and the clothes used by the suspect in the 5pm incident.
Shahrudin reminds the public, especially village folk, that illegal hunting and possession of home made firearms are strictly prohibited.
“Take the incident as a lesson. The law is meant to prevent occurrences of fatalities such as this,” he said referring to the case.
Meanwhile he also urged members of the public to report illicit firearm possessions to the police.
