LAHAD DATU, SABAH – Suspicious black plastic bags inside a man’s car turned out to be wrapping for boxes of contraband cigarettes police worth at RM100,588.
The male driver of a Proton Waja was immediately detained during the 9.20 am scene at Palm Height Residence near Jalan Utama here in operations dubbed ‘Op Kontraban’.
General Operations Force (GOF)’s 17th Battalion Commanding Officer, Supt Rajab Ahad Ismal said his team counted 780 cartons of Premiums, Astros, LA Bold and Nice Bolds and Gudang Garam brand cigarettes.
Meanwhile, Sabah GOF Brigade Commander, SAC Mohd Abduh Ismail said the man was attempting to smuggle the contraband for local distribution.
“All of them were seized including the car and the suspect sent to the district police station for further action.”
He said that with the car, seizures amount to RM 115,188.
“The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act,” Abduh said.
