KOTA KINABALU, SABAH – On 8th August 1963, the North Borneo Legislative Council unanimously decided that 31st of August 1963 would North Borneo’s independence day.

The territory will be known as Sabah whether The Federation of Malaysia happens or not.

”Today is an historic day for Sabah. It marks the beginning of self-government and independence and the end of colonial government,” said Sir William Goode, the last Governor of British for North Borneo on the 31st of August 1963.

StarSabah youth wing vice chairman Prem Kitingan says the public are oriented on the date but not so much of the history behind it.

“Sabah and Sarawak’s independence day was left out in our history books. Just imagine our vast historical events that was not included, all the history lost in time…

“How will we be able to create a future without first knowing our own history? And how will it impact us and the next generation to come if this were to continue?,” he asks.

He went on stress the importance of learning about Sabah, especially the youth, as as the mark of our independence day.

“It is important for us to honour it as how our forefathers did. Independence brings the meaning of being able to stand and govern on our own. The freedom to decide and to direct the affairs for the interest of its people…

“The history of Sabah must not be forgotten, Sabah Day must be acknowledged, recognized and celebrated,” Prem said in a statement.
