SANDAKAN, SABAH – Marine Police here foiled a man’s attempt to smuggle 1,500 turtle eggs on waters near Mile 3 here yesterday.
District Marine Police Commanding Officer, DSP Rusdin Banin, said a team discovered three gunny sacks filled with the contraband in the 6am interception.
“The suspect sped off to a nearby shore and quickly fled on foot. The eggs were found stashed on his pump-boat.”
The eggs Rusdin believes was intended to be sold near the Sandakan markets.
“Seizures including the boat and its outboard engine are worth RM 4,450, brought to the Marine Police headquarters here for further course of action by district Wildlife authorities,” he said.
The offence is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
Rusdin said the success was based on a public tip-off and welcomed more from the maritime community.
